CARE FOR YOUR SPIRIT

To paraphrase Bob Mulholland, professor at Asbury Theological Seminary and groundbreaking spiritual formation author, “Spiritual formation is the life-long process of being constantly transformed by God’s love into the image of Christ for the sake of others/the world.” Choose from among the following Spiritual Care opportunities to participate in the program this year to assist you in your journey of spiritual formation.

Clergy can be supported as they covenant with a personal Spiritual Director in order to pursue a personal plan of spiritual formation. 5. PRACTICING THE SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES (Personal or Small Group)

We are pleased to offer an option this year for clergy to engage a personal spiritual formation activity of practicing the spiritual disciplines as inspired by the book, Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth, by Richard J. Foster. Clergy are invited to acquire this book (online versions are available), or others that offer suggested spiritual discipline practices, select at least three practices of spiritual discipline that you feel would best enhance your spiritual life at this time, and practice one-at-a-time over a period from two weeks to a month. Once a practice is completed, you are invited to make a quick report about how this spiritual discipline has helped your spiritual life. For example, a clergyperson working on solitude for a particular month, might select a personal retreat at a retreat center such as River Haven Inn located in Comfort Texas, or the Casita de Esperanza located near Seguin, Texas. Then you are invited to follow the guide recommended in the book, and report on the experience once completed. It is hoped that these exercises can help to order practices of spiritual discipline into ordinary life. To select this option, complete the start-up questionnaire form and choose this option from the Spiritual Wellness pull-down list. Be sure to answer the additional questions and list the name of the book or resource or other books or resources that you may utilize. Once you complete your activity period, please complete and submit the final reporting form to the Leadership Vitality office to receive your incentive.
